MAJOR AND MINOR HOLIDAYS

  1. Tu Bishvat(15 Shevat 5783): Tu Bishvat, the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, is known as the "New Year for Trees." It is a holiday that celebrates the awakening of nature and the start of the agricultural cycle in Israel. It is often observed by planting trees and consuming fruits.

  2. Purim(14-15 Adar II 5783): Purim is celebrated on the 14th and 15th days of the Hebrew month of Adar (or Adar II in a leap year). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from the plot of Haman, an advisor to the Persian king, as described in the Book of Esther. It is a festive holiday marked by the reading of the Megillah (the Scroll of Esther), wearing costumes, exchanging gifts, and enjoying a festive meal.

  3. Passover(15-22 Nisan 5783): Passover is a major holiday that spans the 15th to the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nisan. It celebrates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, as described in the Book of Exodus. The holiday involves the retelling of the story through the Seder meal, the avoidance of leavened products (chametz), and the eating of matzah (unleavened bread).

  4. Yom HaShoah(27 Nisan 5783): Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is observed on the 27th of Nisan. It is a solemn day of commemoration for the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. It is a time for reflection, remembrance, and honoring the memory of the victims.

  5. Yom HaZikaron(5 Iyar 5783): Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, is observed on the 4th of Iyar. However, in 2023, since the holiday begins at sundown, it spans from May 2 to May 3. It is a day dedicated to honoring the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defense of the country and remembering those who lost their lives in terrorist attacks. The day is marked by ceremonies, memorials, and moments of silence.

  6. Yom HaAtzmaut - (6 Iyar 5783): Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, is celebrated on the 5th of Iyar. However, in 2023, since the holiday begins at sundown, it spans from May 3 to May 4. It commemorates the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. It is a joyous occasion marked by festivities, fireworks, parades, and cultural events.

  7. Lag BaOmer(18 Iyar 5783): Lag BaOmer falls on the 18th of Iyar. It is a minor holiday associated with the end of a plague during the time of Rabbi Akiva. Bonfires, outdoor activities, and religious gatherings are common on this day.

  8. Shavuot(6-8 Sivan 5783): Shavuot takes place on the 6th and 7th of the Hebrew month of Sivan. It commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is a time of joy and gratitude, and it is customary to stay up all night studying Torah. Dairy foods, such as cheesecake and blintzes, are traditionally eaten on this holiday.

  9. Tisha B'Av -Evening of Wed, Jul 26, 2023 – Thu, Jul 27, 2023 (9 Av 5783): Tisha B'Av is observed on the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av. It is a day of fasting and mourning that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, as well as other tragedies in Jewish history. It is a solemn day marked by the reading of the Book of Lamentations and prayers for the rebuilding of the Temple.

  10. Rosh Hashanah - begins on the evening of Friday, September 15th, and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 17th. (1-2 Tishrei 5784): Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins on the 1st day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and prayer. The blowing of the shofar (ram's horn) is a central ritual, and festive meals are shared.

  11. Yom Kippur - Evening of Sun, Sep 24, 2023 – Mon, Sep 25, 2023(10 Tishrei 5784): Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, takes place on the 10th day of Tishrei. It is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, a day of fasting, prayer, and introspection. It emphasizes repentance and seeking forgiveness. Many Jews spend the day in synagogue, engaging in prayer services and seeking spiritual renewal.

  12. Sukkot - Evening of Fri, Sep 29, 2023 – Fri, Oct 6, 2023 (15-22 Tishrei 5784): Sukkot is a week-long holiday that begins on the 15th day of Tishrei. It commemorates the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt. It is characterized by the building and dwelling in temporary booths called sukkahs and the waving of the Four Species (lulav and etrog). It is a time of joy, thanksgiving, and festive meals.

  13. Simchat Torah - Evening of Sat, Oct 7, 2023 – Sun, Oct 8, 2023 (23-24 Tishrei 5784): Simchat Torah falls on the 23rd and 24th of Tishrei. It marks the completion of the annual cycle of Torah readings and the beginning of a new cycle. It is a joyous celebration marked by lively dancing, singing, and parading with the Torah scrolls in synagogue.

  14. Hanukkah - Begins at sundown on Thursday, December 7, 2023, and ends the evening of Friday, December 15, 2023 (25 Kislev - 3 Tevet 5784): Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, begins on the 25th of Kislev and lasts for eight days, spanning into the month of Tevet. It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days. It is celebrated by lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, and enjoying foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot.
